Cellular carriers have announced they intend to fully “sunset” 3G technologies by 2022. 3G is short for third-generation wireless technology, which many security systems rely on to communicate system activity with the monitoring station. At the time of your installation, 3G was the optimal technology available.

Once the 3G sunset occurs, all panels with 3G communicators will cease to communicate with our monitoring station leaving those customers unprotected.

To avoid interruption of your home monitoring, we need to perform an onsite update of your system. Without this update, your home will not be monitored.

If you recently received communication from ACS Security about updating your home security system, it is very important that you get in contact with us as soon as possible to avoid service interruption. What is the 3G sunset?

Carriers are beginning the process of phasing out 3G and older networks in favor of faster and more advanced technology. As a result, devices that use 3G technology will no longer be supported and consumers will need to upgrade to 4G LTE (long term evolution) supported devices to avoid disruption. Beyond continuing service, the benefit of upgrading to an LTE network means faster service and faster streaming of surveillance video.

Why are carriers sunsetting 3G?

With the emergence of faster and more robust technology like 4G (LTE) and 5G, carriers have decided it’s time to stop supporting older technology. The 3G network was built for basic needs like voice and limited data transfer, but due to evolving demands of the modern consumer carriers have needed to provide faster and more comprehensive coverage on the 4G (LTE) and 5G networks.

Can I upgrade to 5G?

Not at this time, the 5G network is not widely available in security cell devices. We fully expect the LTE, long term evolution, network to be able to support your security needs for the foreseeable future.

What does 3G technology have to do with my security system?

Your home security system includes a cellular transmitter that is necessary to communicate with our central service station in the event of an emergency. If your device is currently reliant on the 3G network this means it will no longer function when the 3G sunset takes place. Meaning, your alarm may audibly sound in your home but will no longer communicate with our central service station to notify us that emergency services are needed.

How do I know if I’m affected?

If you have not received notices from ACS Security, you can call us at 877-369-1114 to verify if you will be affected by the 3G sunset.

When do I need to migrate?

Most carriers will fully stop supporting 3G devices by 2022, but will start phasing out the network over time. It is imperative that you act sooner, rather than later, to upgrade your home security system to ensure that there is no lapse in coverage for your service.
